Need to Know
Yes, US citizens need a tourist visa (L-type) to enter China. Apply through your nearest Chinese Embassy or consulate. The process takes 4–6 weeks, so apply early. China has recently expanded visa-free access for some travelers — check the latest rules closer to the date, as policies may change.
Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport (HGH) is the closest and recommended option. Alternatively, you can fly into Shanghai Pudong (PVG) and take a high-speed train to Hangzhou — the ride is about 1.5–2 hours and very comfortable.
Formal attire is requested. For the cathedral ceremony, please dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered. More specific dress code details will be shared as we finalize plans.
We highly recommend downloading WeChat (for messaging and payments), a VPN app of your choice (set it up BEFORE you arrive — it's harder once you're in China), and Didi for transportation. Google Maps and most Western apps are blocked, so plan accordingly.
November in Hangzhou is crisp and cool — daytime temperatures range from 10–18°C (50–64°F), cooling down significantly in the evenings. The fall foliage is gorgeous around West Lake. Pack layers and a light jacket. Rain is possible, so bring a small umbrella.
We recommend arriving 2–3 days before the wedding — around November 25th or 26th — to allow time to recover from jet lag, explore the city, and enjoy Hangzhou with us before the big day!
